Midday traffic through Atlanta was worse than she’d ever seen it. It was unusually hot for this time of the year, which made every driver crabby. Scarlet honked her horn at the fifth car that cut in front of her. She checked the car clock. She had thirty minutes before her appointment with Dania. Being late wasn’t an option.
The last time they met, Dania had been busy taking out her frustration on someone who didn’t do what she wanted, the way she wanted. Thinking of that poor man lying there with part of his skin missing still made her queasy. It scared her to the core to think about what Dania would do to her if she screwed up anything.
Months later, Scarlet wasn’t entirely sure of her job responsibilities. Dania asked her to befriend the new dragon queen. Posing as a wedding coordinator was the perfect way to connect to Dai and gain her trust. It wasn’t a hard job. Dai’s mom had her stressed out; it was easy to swoop in and serve as a buffer. She liked Dai. The dragon treated her with respect. They weren’t best friends, but they were friends.
After another ten minutes, she pulled off the interstate to make her way into town. Dania had wanted to meet at a warehouse. The idea of meeting her in a place like that scared Scarlet. Fortunately, she had an appointment at a floral shop near a small Italian café. Scarlet suggested they meet there. If they were in public, Scarlet felt safer. Dania wouldn’t flay her in front of witnesses.
She swallowed hard. Hopefully not.
One minute before their appointment, she walked into the diner and searched for her employer. There was no sign of Dania. Scarlet sighed. Better she arrived first.
The hostess sat her at a table in the back, and after ordering a glass of water, the door opened, and Dania walked inside. She took off her sunglasses and scanned the tables. When she saw Scarlet, she flashed a big smile and waved as if they’d been friends forever. The hostess offered to walk her back to the table, but Dania smiled and told her not to bother.
Scarlet stiffened. It was too hard to judge if Dania’s smile was friendly or worrisome.
Dania put her hand on Scarlet’s shoulder and leaned down to kiss her on the cheek. “How delightful it is to see you today. You are looking beautiful. You should always wear blue.”
Scarlet patted Dania on the back and returned the greeting. She could play “happy friend” too. “Dania, dear, I’m so glad you were free for lunch today. We have so much to talk about.”
The server came over and asked Dania for her drink order.
“What are you drinking?” Dania smiled at Scarlet.
My face is going to break from all this smiling.
“I started with water. Didn’t know where we were headed,” Scarlet said.
“Let’s live it up, shall we?” Dania turned to the server. “Two Moscow mules, please.”
“Excellent choice,” the server returned.
Dania glanced around. “This is quaint. I guess it’s better than looking at my dusty, old warehouse.
